Tips to Improve Interpretation Skills

Tips to Improve Interpretation Skills

While some people are excellent with their translation they still are not able to do a good job at interpreting because they fail to give notice to other important issues such as tone of voice, pronunciation and intonation. So, what should be borne in mind while improving these qualities to provide better interpretation service?

The tone of voice plays an important role in interpretations. It is best to carry out interpretations in a calm neutral voice although some interpreters may even try to replicate the passion of the speaker’s voice. This reproduction of emotions of the speaker can be permissible if it is kept without going to any extremes which may then sound disrespectful. Also, speaking with great emphasis could leave the interpreter drained and lose vigor quickly.

It is also important to bear in mind the usual tone of voice that is used in communicating different languages. Some languages are spoken in a very calm voice while others are spoken with more emphasis. The tone of voice must be adjusted such that languages spoken with different pitch should be quite similar to one another. This will prevent misunderstandings between people understanding different languages that you are interpreting.

Correct pronunciation is important for you to relay whatever the speaker is communicating properly to the others. The audience must be able to understand what you as the interpreter are trying to tell for which pronunciation and vocabulary must be quite exceptional.

Another factor that needs to be given importance for you to excel as an interpreter is to have the right intonation. Accent is a huge problem while learning other languages as your accent for the native language influences the way you speak the other language. Try to develop good pronunciation skills while learning the other language without much influence from your native language. This needs special exercises and training to achieve and may not be very easy.

Work hard and practice on improving on skills such as tone, pronunciation and intonation and add it to your skills of translation and very soon you will definitely come out in flying colors.

Poll Results-International Mother Language day

21 February was proclaimed the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. This is an international recognition of a Language. Name it.
Here is the answer.
Thank you all who have participated din this poll.

21st February is the International Mother Language Day

21st Feb. stands as the day when the world pays the respect to all the vernacular languages in the world; an event that was initiated in the year 2000 to commemorate all those who achieved martyrdom by sacrificing their own lives for the sake of their mother tongue (Bengali). A proposal was submitted to the UNESCO General Conference in Paris on 17 November 1999 from Bangladesh. And what followed was a strong support from other countries including Bahamas, Belarus, Chile, Dominion Republic, Egypt, Gambia and Honduras among the other twenty-five apart from my own country, India, to encourage a bond between the linguistic diversities as a whole.

UNESCO moved forward to designate Ekushey (i.e. 21st Feb.) as the International Mother Tongue Day.

International Mother Tongue Day grants a fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions on a global basis to inspire international solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

It was the first organized revolt in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to defend the dying language from the abdicable coercion and to re-assert the Bengali rights and cultural values. And there was a price that was paid, many young lives were lost but 21 February 1952(the day when this movement was brutally dealt by the rulers) restored back people’s faith in democracy, their belief in tradition and their loyalty to the historical values, concentrated in the form of their mother tongue, that had once come under an assault.

With nearly 230 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most spoken languages (ranking 5th or 6th in the world). Bengali is the primary language spoken in Bangladesh and is the second most spoken language in India. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengali_language)

Why the translator is expected to get Payment after 90 days?

1. I do not know whether this is normal. I know, that each project you handle is unique, each agency is different. May be you know the agency. You are working for them for long and getting payments in time. SO you may be perfectly comfortable in accepting their payment terms of 90 days.

2. But I think it is not OK. If I were you, I would NOT accept this term because 90 days is too long a period. May be 45 days is OK.

3. It may sound very tempting that you are promised assignments week after week. However, what if they don't pay you as promised. That means, they owe you more and more money. If by any chance agency decides not to pay you would have to spend more time go trying to get your money. And time is money.

4. If you accept ninety days, please don’t not take on any additional assignments from them; instead, tell them that you will be available again as soon as they have settled all outstanding accounts.

5. There are a number of agencies in who reasons that their customers don't pay them. It is not logic. You do not have any agreement with the customers of your client. Your agreement is with your direct client.
